Best waterfalls on São Miguel
1. Cascata do Limbo
This is our favorite waterfall on the island, and honestly, it earns that spot. During hydrangea season it’s straight out of a fairy tale: the bushes form a solid wall on both sides of the trail, lush and heavy with moisture, with blooms the size of a human head. Walking through it, you catch yourself thinking this looks more like an illustration from a children’s book than a real place.
Getting there is easy: a marked path leads straight from the parking lot, so there’s no way to get lost.
You can swim right at the waterfall — the water is briskly cold but refreshing instantly, and wooden tables nearby make it easy to stay for a picnic under the sound of the falls. The photos here come out incredible: hydrangeas, the waterfall, and a light mist from the spray in the background — you feel like the heroine of a fairy tale.
There are noticeably fewer people here than at other spots, but I’d still recommend arriving in the morning to have the place to yourself.
2. Cascata da Ribeira dos Caldeirões
Another beautiful waterfall — inside Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeirões, a nature park on the slopes of Serra da Tronqueira. Along the Ribeira do Guilherme stream stands an entire historic village of 16th-century water mills, and the park’s largest waterfall is already visible from the parking lot.
Just like at Limbo, everything here is covered in hydrangeas during the season — combined with the old stone mills and a forest trail along the water, this is one of the most beautiful spots on the island. Admission is free.
There are noticeably more people here, so it’s worth coming in the morning or at sunset to avoid crowding among the tour groups.
3. Cascata da Gruta
A waterfall hiding in the Azorean forests. The trail starts in Lomba de São Pedro, and the walk there is pure pleasure: dense forest all around, moss underfoot, and birds singing overhead the whole way, so reaching the waterfall is already enjoyable in itself. The trail is easy, with clear markers throughout — getting lost is practically impossible.
If you walk unhurried and take in the flora and fauna along the way, it takes about 20–30 minutes one way.
4. Cascata do Salto do Prego
A very beautiful waterfall, but also fairly busy. The trail starts in Faial da Terra and passes through picturesque spots where roosters and chickens roam freely. Walking unhurried, it takes 40–60 minutes one way.
Because of its popularity, this spot is rarely empty. If you want to stand at the waterfall in peace, without other people in your shots, start the trail as early as possible.
5. Cascata do Grená
The waterfall Salto do Morgado (also known as Salto da Inglesa) sits inside the paid Parque Grená — 18 hectares of forest, trails, viewpoints, and the ruins of a historic manor near Lagoa das Furnas, just past the fumaroles where the famous Cozido das Furnas is cooked.
