5 Best Beaches on São Miguel, Azores

The Azores aren't a Caribbean archipelago, and beach time isn't the main reason to fly to São Miguel. But that's exactly what makes these beaches special: black volcanic sand, wild rocky coves, natural pools heated by a volcano, and almost no crowds. We've put together the spots on the island that are genuinely worth a swim, a wave, or just sitting with the sunset in front of you.

Best beaches on São Miguel

1. Praia dos Moinhos

One of the most colorful beaches on the island — and honestly, the most photogenic. It’s always lively with locals, roosters wander around calmly, and right on the beach stands the great Os Moinhos - Lounge Garden bar, where you can easily spend the whole day: a cocktail in hand, and the view does the rest.

Overall this is a place to go not just for a swim but to spend half a day: bright, lively, and very photogenic.

2. Mosteiros Beach

A beach near the village of Mosteiros on the west side of the island, with black volcanic sand and rocky islets right in the ocean. It’s one of the best spots on São Miguel to catch the sunset — the islets near shore turn into black silhouettes against an orange sky, and the view feels almost unreal.

3. Água D’Alto Beach

A beach on the south coast of the island, calmer and more “classic” in shape — a flat sandy shore with easy water access. A good option if, after rocky and volcanic spots, you want a regular beach day without surprises.

4. Areal de Santa Barbara

The island’s main surf beach, on the north coast. The waves here are consistent and suit both beginners and experienced surfers — you can take a lesson or rent a board at Azores Watergliders. After surfing, stop by Beach Club - Surf & Snacks right on the beach: a great spot to grab a bite with an ocean view.

5. Ponta da Ferraria

The most unusual place to swim on the whole island — a natural thermal pool right in the ocean, heated by a volcanic spring. Admission is free, and that alone makes Ponta da Ferraria worth a trip on its own. Because it’s free and popular, it can get very crowded, especially in peak season and during the best tide phase for swimming — if you want fewer people, come early in the morning.

iconBest to arrive close to low tide — that’s when the hot volcanic spring warms the water the most noticeably. Be sure to check the tide schedule before your trip.

If you have time left on the island after the beaches, add our best waterfalls on São Miguel and best viewpoints on São Miguel to your route — both are wrapped in hydrangeas during the same season. And once you make it to mainland Portugal, day trip to Cabo da Roca has its own stretch of dramatic Atlantic coastline worth the detour.
