How to plan a trip to Ireland
Our Dublin guide is written for a first visit, and the Ireland coast guide follows 11 stops from Cork to Slieve League, from Cobhโs colourful houses to wild Keem Beach.
Dublin
- From the airport: Aircoach (#700) runs 24/7 and takes about 25-30 minutes, from โฌ8. City buses #16 and #41 cost โฌ2 but take 50-60 minutes.
- Leap Card: it costs โฌ5 and is refundable for visitors. Without it, buses take only coins, with no change.
- Book ahead: Kilmainham Gaol (โฌ8) sells out, so reserve a spot in advance.
- A day outside the city: the DART takes about 30 minutes north to Howth, for the cliff walk and seafood.
The coast
- Cobh, 25 minutes from Cork, is where the Titanic set sail on its last voyage in April 1912.
- The Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre costs โฌ15 per person, but the wild viewpoint a little to the north shows the same cliffs with almost no one around.
- Slieve League rises 601 metres, about three times the Cliffs of Moher. Parking is โฌ10 for 2 hours, and the cliff edge is a 20-minute walk.
- Drombeg Stone Circle is best at sunset: entry is free and there are almost no tourists.

What is the best time to visit Ireland?
Spring (April-May) and early autumn (September-October) offer mild weather, fewer crowds, and lush green landscapes. Summer brings the longest days and a busy festival season, while winter is quieter and cheaper but wetter.
Do I need a visa to visit Ireland?
Citizens of the US, Canada, Australia, and most EU countries can visit Ireland visa-free for tourism. Note that Ireland is not part of the Schengen Area, so a separate entry is required even if you've already been elsewhere in Europe. Visa rules change, so check official sources before planning your trip.
Is Ireland expensive to travel?
Ireland is a mid-to-high-cost destination. Dublin is the priciest city, with accommodation and dining above the European average. Exploring smaller towns and rural areas by rental car can be much more budget-friendly.
Is it safe to drive in Ireland?
Ireland drives on the left, and rural roads can be very narrow and winding. If you're not used to left-hand traffic, allow extra time and take care on country lanes. An international driving permit is not required for most nationalities.
What is the weather like in Ireland?
Ireland has a mild, temperate climate with frequent rain year-round. Summers are warm but rarely hot (15-20ยฐC), and winters are cool but not harsh. Rain gear is essential no matter when you visit.
